Just days ago, the world stood still as the judge in the Derek Chauvin trial read the jury’s verdict, which found Chauvin guilty on all three counts for the murder of George Floyd. On Friday night, a two-hour “20/20” goes behind the headlines to remember Floyd and provide an intimate and emotional portrait of his life, told by those who knew him best.
The program reports on the protests and anger across the nation in response to the killing of Floyd and systemic racism and police brutality against Black Americans, the investigation into his death, the trial and the country’s reaction to the verdict. “20/20” also explores what the verdict means for the nation, questioning if this could be a pivotal moment for race in America.
The two-hour program features interviews with Gianna Floyd, Floyd’s youngest daughter; friends and family of Floyd; Christopher Martin, the former store clerk who testified that he regretted taking the allegedly counterfeit $20 bill from Floyd; Maya Santamaria, former nightclub owner who employed both Floyd and Chauvin; and Clarence Castile, uncle of Philando Castile. “20/20” also includes exclusive television interviews with Chauvin’s high school classmates.
