A blood drive has been set up this Wednesday (December 1, 2021) for Tottenville High School student, Erika Cavaliere. 18 year old Erika from Staten Island suffers from Cooley’s anemia, a disorder that weakens her body and threatens her internal organs and needs bi-weekly blood transfusions.
The Cavaliere/Cooley’s Anemia Foundation Blood Drive takes place from 2:30PM to 7:45PM at the Staten Island Donor Center. The Center is located at 2791 Richmond Avenue in SI, New York. Those with ANY blood type are encouraged to donate.
Quotes below are from Erica’s mother.
“They didn’t have her blood, and her blood count went way down, she had no strength. That’s why she needs the blood transfusion, to give her strength. Sometimes, she can’t even get out of bed.’’
“It’s not only for my daughter, but for other people that need transfusions — blood diseases, car accidents, surgeries,’’ Cavaliere said. “It’s really bad right now.’’
You may donate blood if you are at least 17 years old (16 years old with written consent from parent or legal guardian), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in good health.
